Hound River Farm
Katahdin Sheep
Selecting for Parasite Resistance Genetics since 2007
We've been raising registered Katahdin Hair Sheep on 240 acres in the coastal plains region of South Georgia since 2005. Our farm consists of Bermuda and Bahia pastures, woodlands, and wetlands. We overseed our pastures in Fall with annual rye grass, oats, and clover for extended grazing. We are members of Katahdin Hair Sheep International, National Sheep Improvement Program and Eastern Alliance for Production Kathadins: www.easternalliancekatahdins.com
Selection Criteria for Hound River Farm Katahdin Sheep:
Performance and growth on pasture: Our sheep are on pasture year-round and adapt well to our hot, humid climate. We select for easy-care sheep; ewes that consistently twin on pasture and are excellent mothers with ample milk
Scientific selection for parasite resistance: We use a combination of on-farm fecal egg counts and genomically enhanced Estimated Breeding Values to select animals with innate genetic resistance to parasites. We have participated in multiple USDA, SARE and University research studies to identify animals with the genetic ability to resist parasitic infections and the ability to pass on this heritable trait to their offspring.
Members of the National Sheep Improvement Program: We collect and submit performance data on all of our sheep through the National Sheep Improvement Program. The Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) we receive back allow us to objectively select for important performance traits such as growth, mothering, milk, prolificacy, and parasite resistance.
Production records: We keep up-to-date health and production records on all our sheep, including weights, fecal egg counts, ewe production, lambing, health and vaccination records. All ewes and breeding rams have genomically enhanced Estimated Breeding Values providing more accuracy to measured performance traits.
Healthy sheep: Our sheep are well cared for in a clean, humane, and protected environment. We've been a certified scrapie-free flock since 2005.
Top-of-the-line genetics: We select our stud rams based on high, balanced maternal, growth and parasite resistant EBVs.
